High school Heimlich maneuver success caught on camera

A high-schooler’s friend saved his life at the lunch table after he began choking on his food.

A video posted on the School District of La Crosse’s Facebook page, shows Ian Brown performing the Heimlich maneuver on Will Olsen.

The La Crosse Police Department said in a press release that the school nurse, Kim Mahlum, said Olsen’s classmates thought he was joking, but when Brown noticed the color in Olsen’s face change, he took action.

Luckily for Olsen, Brown knew the Heimlich maneuver due to his involvement in La Crosse Police Department’s Police Explorer program.

According to La Crosse Police Department, “The Police Explorer program offers young adults a personal awareness of the criminal justice system through training, practical experiences, competition, and other activities.  Additionally, the program promotes personal growth through character development, respect for the rule of law, physical fitness, good citizenship, and patriotism.”

USA Today, reports that Olson told WISN 12 NEWS , “I could be dead now. I’m thankful. I can’t say thank you enough for what he did. There’s so many words that can explain it.”
