Shaun White wins historic gold medal after epic performance

The United States reaches the century mark in gold.

Shaun White’s flawless performance secured the 100th gold medal in the history of the Winter Olympics for Team USA. White cemented his place among Olympic royalty, winning his third career gold medal in the snowboard halfpipe event.

The golden run, which included back-to-back jumps of 1440 degrees of spin, completed a four year comeback journey for White, who finished fourth and without a medal in 2014. The red headed charismatic snowboarder rose to prominence after winning gold in 2006 and then again in 2010.

White told the Associated Press his fearlessness is what allows him to have success. “I knew I had it in me,” he said. “The fear was out of the door. I’m at the Olympics. I had to do it. I’m standing at the top, in my favorite position, with the pressure of the world and one run to go. Man, it brings out the best in me. I’m so glad that’s a part of me as a competitor.”

As a nation, only Norway owns more winter Olympic gold medals.
